When Everyone Does What Is Right in Their Own Eyes
Judges 21:25 reveals a sobering truth: when God is not acknowledged as King, confusion grows, and people begin to trust their own judgment above His wisdom. “Every man did that which was right in his own eyes” is not a statement of freedom, but of spiritual drift. It is what happens when truth becomes personal preference and obedience is replaced by self direction.
This verse calls us to look inward with honesty. Am I shaping my life by God’s Word, or by my own feelings, opinions, and desires? It is easy to believe that what feels right must be right. Yet Scripture warns us that the heart can be deceived, and our own understanding is limited. When we remove God from the center, we do not gain clarity; we lose it.
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12
The answer to spiritual confusion is not more self confidence, but deeper surrender. God’s leadership brings order where there is chaos, peace where there is unrest, and wisdom where there is uncertainty. A life submitted to the Lord is not weak; it is anchored. It does not depend on changing feelings, but on unchanging truth.
Self reflection begins when self rule ends. The question is not whether we have opinions, but whether our opinions are submitted to God. In a world that celebrates independence, the believer is called to holy dependence. We are not meant to be our own king. We are meant to be led by the One who sees the end from the beginning.
Today, let this verse invite you to examine your choices, your motives, and your direction. Ask the Lord to reveal any area where you have been doing what seems right instead of what is right according to His Word. True wisdom begins with humility, and true peace begins with obedience.
May your heart be fully yielded to the Lord, so that your life reflects not personal preference, but divine purpose.
