Honouring Family, Honouring God: A Reflection on Exodus 20:12

Honouring Family, Honouring God: A Reflection on Exodus 20:12

Exodus 20:12 is more than a commandment; it is a divine invitation to live with humility, gratitude, and wisdom. When God says, “Honour thy father and thy mother”, He is teaching us that honour begins at home. The way we treat our parents often reveals the condition of our hearts. Respect, patience, gratitude, and obedience are not small virtues. They are powerful expressions of love that shape our character and our future.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12

This verse also carries a promise. God connects honour with blessing, reminding us that a life built on reverence brings stability and favour. Honouring parents does not mean pretending they are perfect. It means choosing a posture of respect, even when relationships are difficult. It means refusing bitterness, speaking with kindness, and valuing the sacrifice, care, and authority that parents carry.

What Honour Looks Like Today

In a world that often celebrates independence and self promotion, God calls us to something higher. Honour is seen in listening carefully, helping willingly, forgiving quickly, and showing appreciation openly. It is seen when adult children continue to care for aging parents, when young people obey with a willing spirit, and when families choose peace over pride.

Honour is not weakness. It is strength under control. It is a reflection of God’s own heart, because every act of honour toward our parents is also an act of obedience toward the Lord. When we honour those He placed over us, we position ourselves to receive wisdom, peace, and blessing.

Take time today to ask yourself whether your words, attitude, and actions reflect this commandment. If there has been distance, disappointment, or disobedience, God can restore what is broken. Begin with prayer. Ask the Lord to soften your heart, heal old wounds, and teach you how to honour in a deeper way. A heart that honours God will learn to honour family.

Honour opens the door to blessing. It teaches us that true greatness is found not in self exaltation, but in faithful obedience to God’s Word.
